IBM InterConnect 2016 Day 5

“Don’t worry about me…I’ll turn the lights off on my way out!”

Despite a late night enjoying Elton John’s performance, I still found myself so engrossed in the Hands on Lab sessions today that I had to be kicked out at closing time! The Hands on Labs are a great way to experience IBM’s platform and technologies using pre-build Virtual Machines. Its like doing a tutorial, but you have IBMers standing by to bounce ideas off and help troubleshoot if things go wrong.

Unfortunately, I haven’t mastered the art of being in two places at once, and with a 30 minute walk between Mandalay Bay and MGM Grand, I have missed a couple of presentations that I would have liked to see.

I did catch a great session by the informative Johan Ferket on improving reliability and integrity using Maximo EAM with Asset Performance Management (APM)  solutions. Johan explained the components of APM and how they overlaid the asset life-cycle, the four key areas being:

  • Business;
  • Data;
  • People / Process; and
  • Systems.

Johan discussed a risk based strategy which required real-time visibility into asset performance. In summary the key points are to improve collaboration within an organisation to develop a united strategy, ensure leadership seeds change at a cultural level and to have knowledgeable staff execute the strategy.

Continuous Improvement of Your Asset Reliability Program Using IBM Maximo (Jason Verly, Davisco Foods)

I’ve been following Jason Verly’s contributions to the Maximo user community for a number of years, so I was excited to see him in person and listen to the work he is doing in manufacturing to improve reliability. Jason delivered a great presentation and is clearly a master of the one-liner!

The adage “If you don’t measure it, you can’t fix it” drew some …. colourful 😉 … disdain from Jason, who prefers “If you don’t monitor it, you can’t improve it”.  This he related back to a quote from Bruce Lee that his martial arts teacher had shared with him and promptly showed us a video of himself breaking two pieces of timber for his grading.

Jason is an expert BIRT report writer and he discussed many of the reports that he has written to help improve data within Maximo. His report on ensuring labour hours were entered correctly against available hours is a challenge I am sure many organisations also face.

IBM InterConnect 2016 has been an intense immersion in all things IBM, and I’m looking forward to sharing my knowledge and experiences with my colleagues and clients who were unable to join us in Las Vegas this year.  Look out for my final post in the next few days wrapping up the Maximo/EAM highlights of the event and outlining my thoughts on what all EAM professionals should be thinking about in 2016 and beyond.
